- Reached $15/hour minimum wage in July. This was 2 1/2 years ahead of the state. POP board member, Julieta Aragon, who works with businesses and workers on minimum wage issues had her city contract renewed.
- POP! joined union UNITE HERE during the pandemic to support the cause of laid off hospitality workers at The Langham Huntington hotel. The actions gained national attention when Major League Baseball teams stayed at the Langham during the playoffs.
- POP! worked in coalition with the NAACP, NDLON, the Coalition for Increased Civilian Oversight of Pasadena Police (CICOPP), the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) and the Clergy Community Coalition (CCC) to pass an ordinance creating a Community Police Oversight Commission with an Independent Police Auditor.
In recognition of these joint organizing efforts, three commissioners will be appointed from community based organizations.
POP’s part-time community organizer, Florence Annang, through her series of community Zoom conversations continues to make meaningful progress building bridges and relationships among the Pasadena Police Department and communities of color.
- POP! boosted its productive and respectful relationship with the City and community through its Census2020 outreach. In 10 weeks, POP! canvassers paid through a grant from the City went door to door reaching over 4,000 households in hard to count areas. Participation rates increased over 10%.
- POP! supported Get Out the Vote activities using the same Census2020 canvassers this time paid through a grant from the Liberty Hill Foundation. They hung Get Out the Vote and Voter Registration information on over 10,000 doors during the fall campaign. Voter participation in Pasadena’s Northwest community reached all-time highs.
POP! co-sponsored candidate forums for Pasadena mayor’s, city council, and PUSD board member elections.
The Bernie Sanders campaign invited POP! to sit in the front row at his Pasadena rally because we had made national news as community leaders for workers rights and a livable wage.
- We added Brandon Lamar, a proven community leader and millennial, to our board. And, we’ve deepened our relationships with community and faith-based organizations such the NAACP, NDLON, Making Housing and Community Happen, the IMA, and the CCC that will result in making Pasadena a more just and inclusive city.
In 2021, POP! will continue to advance police reforms and prioritize adding more affordable housing units for low income families while steadfastly guarding worker and immigrant rights. We need your help to keep moving forward.
